Cycling doping nightmare continues at the Spanish Vuelta
Despite the constant battle against doping in the Cycling World, the nightmare seems not to have an end. A new case has emerged and this one involves the German T-Mobile team; Lorenzo Bernucci has been fired by the team after testing positive during the past Tour of Germany last August.
The 27-year-old cyclist whose career wins include a stage win in 2005 at the Tour de France was dismissed after the results revealed the usage of Sibutramine; which is an appetite suppressant taken to treat obesity, but it is listed as a banned stimulant on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list.
After the third stage at the Vuelta, Bernucci occupied the 21st place in the overall standings and his performance was promising. Now, things have definitely changed for both the cyclist and T-Mobile. For some reason it seems as things have gathered together to make the struggle even worse as the news of Bernucci’s sacking came along with announcement that Germany's Gerolsteiner team decided to put an end to the association with cycling by the end of 2008.
The German sponsors stated that “the recent doping incidents are not the reason for the decision. They did, however, contribute to the temporary devaluation of cycling as a communications platform."
The Sport of Cycling keeps getting damaged by the overwhelming shadow of doping, but what is most scary is the fact that no one in the circuit seems to know what to do about the problem. Everyone wonders now if there is a future for cycling in the professional level as it will be soon removed from the upcoming Olympic Games...so we all wonder what comes next?
