Charting your course toward a better job or promotion will involve how to acquire the requisite skills and knowing how to sell your talents. These  steps  tell you how to get that one position to the next but also how to get from one profession to the next.

1. Be a good presenter. Learn to acquire a compelling voice, learn to enunciate clearly and project enthusiasm. Practice.  Presenting is theater. Act it out, persuade, not impartial or solemn. 2. Write well. Short, clear, crisp sentences. No spelling mistakes. Good grammar. Never dictate. Always edit or rewrite. Persuasive writing is always conversational in style, not academics. Just like you are talking casually to a friend at a dinner table.

3. A talent for ideas. Read everything. Learn to read fast and digest them. Keep up with trade journals that your bosses read. Regularly check out best seller list of books, movies, music, products and ask why this? Why now? Monitor top tv shows, pick up a magazine you’ve never read before. Scan another industry’s reports.
 You need to tap into what’s going on in the world. Find out what the other people are up to. Browse today’s culture for signs of the future. The more you know about trends, the more ideas you generate and the further ahead of the pack you are. Innovative thinking is a tremendous commodity. To get ideas constantly clip, file, bookmark, highlight anything interesting you come across. Stay informed.

4. Do more than asked. Don’t just spin the wheel , learn to go the extra mile.

5. Contribute to the bottomline. Prove your worth in monetary terms. Help the company make more money more than it will cost them to pay you. If the company has a lean staff you could suggest to organize an internship program with local colleges where students would provide free help in exchange for a course credit. Bring along ideas for boosting circulation if you are interviewing at newspaper or magazine company. If you are working at architectural or law firm name potential clients you could bring and deliver.
