Plus Size Clothing: It Is Time For The Fashion To Realize The Changing Size
There is a growing problem and it is obesity. Estimates show that about half of all women are overweight or obese. This percent is even larger for women who are middle aged, where almost two thirds of them are overweight. The number of teens who are overweight is also increasing. The results of the increasing number of people who are overweight is a growing market for clothing plus size and bigger.
In fact, the fastest growing segment in the fashion business is plus size clothing. Amazingly though, the industry has not fully met the demand. Plus size clothing tends to be behind the latest fashion trends. The styles that are available tend to simply be larger versions of clothes designed for smaller sizes instead of specifically targeting the needs and forms of plus size women.
The fashion industry has adjusted to the growing size of the population by inflating the size of items. What used to be a size 14 may today be a size 14. This gives the customer the idea that they are wearing a small size, without them having to face their larger figure. The result of this change is unhappy customers shopping for plus size fashion clothing.
Recently, there have been some positive changes. A group of American led manufactures of plus size clothing recently finished the biggest sizing study of women since World War 2. This was done so that clothing will fit today's woman better. Now, fashion show even feature a few plus size models and there are some plus size fashion shows, but these still remain in the background of the overall fashion industry.
The epidemic of obesity is running on showing no signs of decreasing. It actually appears as though it may be increasing, at least during the near future. The fashion industry is well aware that this trend is occurring and they are beginning to capitalize on the trend. Plus size clothing stores and fashions are no longer a niche market, but rather are quickly becoming the standard size for a large portion of today's consumers. This new reality should, and will, quickly become reflected in high fashion, with plus size fashions being designed specifically for this market.
