Minor Injury – Foot Injury

For anyone who has ever become the victim of a foot injury you will know that a foot injury can disrupt and stop things that all of us take for granted in our daily life such as walking, driving and going up and down stairs.

Injuring your foot often results in being difficult to heal and often takes a long time to do so. The most common signs and symptoms that you have a problem with your foot are pain, swelling, stiffness, weakness, instability and locking.

A foot injury can come as the result of such accidents as a slip, trip or fall, sports injury or a work related injury. When it comes to a foot injury you could be suffering from a torn ligament, sprain or broken a bone in it. Whatever injury you have sustained to your foot it is vital that you seek treatment straight away. It is important to get medical help straight away as you will most likely require an x-ray to be taken.

One of the main forms of treatment when it comes to a foot injury is rest. You should keep in mind what has now become known as RICE, which stands for:

• Rest – you should keep off your feet as much as possible
• Ice – you should place a bag of ice on your foot, which should be placed on for 20 minutes then taken off for 40 minutes and then placed back on for another 20 minutes etc
• Compression – lightly wrap a bandage round the affected area but while taking care not to wrap it too tight
• Elevation – sit in a position where you are able to elevate your foot higher than your waist in order to reduce swelling and pain.
