How to Survive University for the first time
As a university student for the first time this year (studying commerce), I have to say there's a lot to learn as a first time/newcomer to the world after high school.
Here are a few points to note when first starting:
- Friends, Friends, Friends! Remember, in the first 3-4 weeks everyone is new to the whole concept and are in exactly the same boat as you. When you get the chance, just say Hi to the person sitting next to you - that's how I've made many good friends, all of whom have helped me and that I've helped. You can't survive without them.
- When involved in group work, try to get along with your group. Talk to them not only about the task (although that's very important) but really try to get to know them. You'll produce much better work. Remember, everyone works at a different pace and it's great to get a feel for everyone's ideas.
- Time Management - there are so many sites/blogs these days that explain time management, get searching now! It's important to do work on a regular basis. I know I was ill for a week and I got so far behind that I spent one entire weekend inside trying to catch up! Never leave things to the last minute because you'll only regret it later. Never give up.
- In the first week, if you haven't been given a tour. Spend a few minutes checking your campus out. The library will be your most important resource, so get acquainted with that as quick as you can.
- Your university website. These days, it's all on the web. Generally if you have any problems or queries they're usually on the website. Ask at the office if you have any trouble.
- Ask questions. In tutorials, always ask questions. People will always say there's no such thing as a dumb question - and there isn't! Tutors will happily help a student. Remember, if you need help - it's always available.
- Most of all, enjoy it! There's much more freedom at university - make the most of it.
