College Scholarships for Single Mothers

Single mothers have to do everything. They have to work, provide for their kids and raise them, run all the necessary errands for the household, etc. Being a single mother is truly a daunting task considering all the responsibilities one has to face.

Many single mothers work hard to fulfill mountains of obligations. Unfortunately, sometimes even their best efforts fall short. This is because many single mothers simply do not earn enough money.
The sad reality is that many sufficiently paying jobs are unavailable to a considerable number of single mothers. The reason for this is that a lot of single mothers weren’t able to finish their post secondary education.

According to ‘Raise Their Voice’, a website that aims to disclose serious issues facing people in society who are desperately in need, 57 percent of single mothers are below the poverty line. Among single mothers under the age of 25, a staggering 85 percent live below the poverty line.
These depressing statistics are rooted in the fact that 22 percent of single mothers are unemployed. On the other hand, 45 percent of single mothers who are employed are forced to take more than one job just to be able to get by.

These statistics show that the jobs available for many single moms are limited.
Raise the Nation, an organization that provides economic support for single mothers who want to complete their education, also came up with a study which found out that single moms with at least a bachelors degree are five times less likely be in such a desperate situation.

When we add to the picture Raise the Nation’s finding, along with that of Raise Their Voice, it becomes clear how vital postsecondary education is if many single mothers are to have a chance to improve the current state of their lives.

Of course, if many single mothers are already struggling to provide for their families, how could they possibly afford financing a college education? The answer is through scholarship grants.
The good news is that there are many organizations recognize the dilemma of single mothers. These organizations provide scholarships specifically for single mothers. Raise the Nation is one of those organizations. Other examples include the Jeanette Rankin Foundation, R.O.S.E. and W.I.S.P., to name a few.

For single moms who want to continue on with their education to have better opportunities, scholarships for single moms can be a great help indeed.
