A million miles from home: finding paradise in Providenciales
Britain once ruled a vast empire that at various points in time has stretched from the Americas in the west, all the way through to Asia and Australasia in the east. Indeed, for over a century, the British Empire was the foremost global power. But whilst most of this is now consigned to the history books, there is still a smattering of territories around the globe that act as a reminder of Britain’s historical conquests.
There still remain fourteen British overseas territories dotted around the world, ranging from the Falkland Islands in the south all the way up to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the north. However, anyone who visits Providenciales, the most populated of the Turks and Caicos Island group, will soon realise that it really couldn’t be any more different from the country that holds its’ sovereignty.
Situated to the western side of the Caicos Archipelago, Providenciales forms part of a group of tropical islands in the Caribbean region. Known locally as ‘Provo’, the island offers a relaxing, sun-soaked vacation for anyone who ventures onto its’ shores.
Stunning beaches encompass the island, the most spectacular being the 12 mile stretch located at Grace Bay, which has been rated as one of the best beaches in the world. Furthermore, this area is protected by a coral reef, which provides a great opportunity for diving fanatics alike and has even led to it being nominated as one of the top ten diving destinations in the world.
However, whilst ‘Provo’ clearly ticks all the boxes for beach lovers and diving enthusiasts, there are also several sites of historical interest too, for those who want to dig a little into the island’s past. Cheshire Hall, for example, is a two hundred year-old former cotton plantation that sits against the modern backdrop of ‘Provo’. The ruins have been preserved by the National Trust, and besides the historical significance of this site, they also offer spectacular views across the island.
Furthermore, like any top tourist destination, Providenciales has all the usual modern conveniences such as top hotels, spas, restaurants, bars and there is even a casino and golf course. And for a spot of retail therapy, there are three main shopping centres offering the chance to buy some souvenirs as well as clothes and beachwear.
‘Provo’ is as beautiful, accessible and activity-rich a place as anyone is likely to find anywhere in the world, with flights to Providenciales available in abundance throughout the UK to help get you on your way to this popular tourist destination. And whilst the Turks and Caicos Islands may remain an official British overseas territory, any visitor will soon realise that it does indeed feel like a million miles from home!
