Things to do in Kansas

Like many states Kansas is pretty chilly in the month of February, but we have found several sites that you should see and for some of them you don’t even have to get out of your car to see.

If you’re passing through Cawker City you can’t miss the World’s Largest Ball of Twine.  The ball was started by Frank Stoeber on his farm in 1953.  The ball grew to weigh 5,000 pounds, 8 feet high and had 1,175,180 feet of twine on it by 1957.  In 1961 he donated the ball to the city and the Cawker City Community Club is now the official owner of the Ball of Twine.  The ball never stops growing as the city holds a twine-a-thon to keep it going.

As you are driving through Godland you can’t help but see the 80-foot high, 24x32 foot replica painting of the Van Gogh sunflowers.  The Van Gogh Sunflower Project is Godland’s latest attraction on I-70.  The city is actually well known for their sunflowers, but you’ll have to wait until late June to see the acres of sunflowers in all their glory.

Lucas is a small town of only 400 people between the Post Rock Country and the Smoky Hills Region.  The town is located at the junction of Highway 18 and 232.  Here you can’t help but see the famous Garden of Eden.  S.P. Dinsmoor, a Civil War veteran, built the unique limestone and cement home and garden in the early 1900s.  The Garden of Eden features a stone long cabin as well as 150 cement sculptures designed from his interpretation of life and the biblical stories.  There is also a mausoleum on the grounds where Dinsmoore and his wife are buried.  His body is on display behind glass for viewing.

Andover features the greatest collection of air moving devices in the world.  At the Museum of the American Fan Collectors you will find over 250 fans on display.  Many fans are not your run of the mill fans but are rare and one of a kind.  Andover is the county seat of Butler County and is the fasted growing community in the county.

Kansas is unique in every sense of the world.  The state is also a beautiful state full of corn, wheat and sunflowers at every turn, especially in the summer months.  In February you can see across the fields for miles.
