Santiago de la Ribera
We often visit a little seaside resort in the Mar Menor called "Santiago de la Ribera". It is well sign posted. Santiago de la Ribera is a hidden gem on the Costa Calida. Santiago de la Ribera is full of predominately Spanish people, it feels as though you are holidaying in 'real' Spain. There is a pedestrianised palm tree lined promenade which is often bustling with families having a stroll to walk off their dinner. On the beach in the centre of the promenade is a white building, home to one the best Seafood Restaurants in the Costa Calida; "Miguel Restaurant".
Miguel Pescaderia (fish restaurant) does not look very special at first glance. You walk through the fish mongers to the Restaurant. There are huge windows that open up for a feel of alfresco dining. There are also several tables 'on' the beach during the summer months. There are fantastic views of the sea and the little Spanish wooden fishing boats swaying by moon light. The service is excellent, and the fish is very fresh and cooked subtly to perfection. We have been there several times, with friends, family, and children, and also for a romantic evening.
Also on the front in Santiago de la Ribera are many restaurants, bars, and ice cream shops. Most ice cream shops (heladeria in Spanish) sell Crepes, fresh coffee, and waffles too. With great flavour ice creams such as Kinder Egg or Pistachio. A real treat! One of the bars has several beds (tastefully done) on the beach with tall sticks stuck in the sand lit at the top of that candle light effect. There is chill out music, and you can enjoy your drink on a bed on the beach by night!
Also on the beach are several climbing frames scattered around. There are children everywhere enjoying the warm evenings, making friends, and having fun. Throughout the summer evening there is often bouncy castle and a few funfair rides for the little ones. All are very reasonably priced.
Once a year there is a huge Airshow called Aire Murica. Countries from all over the world send their very best aircrafts and pilots to take part. The Red Arrows are always there. It is normally held on the first weekend in June, the place is packed full of people. All day the world's elite aircrafts fly over the beach whilst families enjoy paddling and watching the show. There are plenty of stalls selling refreshments, food, souvenirs, and even a free bouncy castle!
