A Guide to Frankfurt
Due to the Holy Roman Empire Frankfurt has always been an important trading centre especially during the Middle Ages when the cloth trade blossomed, and is still growing. It is now the biggest stock exchange in Europe and has become Germany's main centre of banking. Unfortunately in March of 1994 the old town was ruined by allied bombing which left very few of the buildings standing, including the medieval buildings. However due to a rebuild Frankfurt is now Germany's most popular city for cultural events, small breaks and shopping. It also has some of best architectural sites in Germany.
Travelling
Most people visiting Frankfurt arrive at the Rhine-Main Airport which gives you quick and easy entry to the city by bus or train. If you wish to travel to Frankfurt by car then it is a good road from all directions and the views are magnificent. You can easily hire a car online but it is important to book in advance.
Accommodation
Because Frankfurt is such an enterprising business area it is bustling with both tourists and business men and women and therefore there is a lot of accommodation of all different sizes. The accommodation prices vary and are much more expensive when there are trade fairs on around the city and during holiday periods.
Attractions
Luckily most of the more impressive attractions in the city are within walking distance from one another or you can easily hire a bike if this is your preferred method of travelling around. You must not miss the Paulskirche which is where the first freely nominated German parliament sat in 1848, and Dom the ornate cathedral where some of the German emperors were elected and Leinwandhaus the incredibly important Gothic building.
Food and Drink
There are literally hundreds of different bars and restaurants in Germany offering all different types of cuisine, live music and entertainment can be found in some of the bigger bars. The Bockenheim district caters to a younger university crowd with little bistros and little cafe's.
