Amalfi –Go a little further away from the madding crowds
The Amalfi or Neapolitan Riviera as many know is a region that offers some amazing coastal scenery with it’s hill side cottages clinging to the cliffs overlooking the sea – but why not go that little further south by just 40 miles and head to the Cilento coastline?
It offers all of the scenery that one expects of Amalfi but has the added advantage of large swaths of fine sand beaches that are empty (except 02-22 August when it becomes invaded by the population of Naples!) plus a variety pretty fishing villages such as San Marco and nearby is the stunning inland medieval town of Castellabate which perches on rocky promontory overlooking the sea.
However, it is not just the beaches, but also the astonishing preservation of the former Greek city of Paestum which worth of a daylong visit. Later inhabited by the Romans the city gradually disappeared under ash and dense vegetation and forest. Only when it was decided in the 18th Century to construct a new road through the area was the city re- discovered.
The temples have been remarkable preserved and now considered to be the best examples of Greek Doric architecture and the whole area offers original mosaics in the Roman bathhouses still on show and still being discovered. The whole being surrounded by walls made from lava doubtless supplied by the still active volcano of Vesuvius.
