Water pump: Heart of Saab cooling system

The water pump installed on a Saab is part of the car's cooling system that is designed to circulate radiator fluid in the engine block. It is driven by a belt, often a timing belt with a plastic cover, and powered by the car's internal combustion engine. As the engine runs the car and produces heat, the Saab water pump is circulating radiator fluid to take the heat off the engine bay. It then radiates the heat into the atmosphere through the grill at the flank of the radiator block.

Saab water pumps differ from one another according to the way they pump radiator fluid. Aside from a timing belt pump, there are Saab water pumps that operate through a belt and pulley, and others via a gear or chain. The gear assembly of these Saab water pumps supplies power to a shaft on which there is an impeller. The water pump impeller then spins and circulates coolant in much the same way a propeller works on a boat or airplane to move water or air. The shaft and impeller spin on a sealed bearing, and this bearing is the part of a water pump that usually wears out and needs maintenance.

Performance Saab water pumps, on the other hand, uses centrifugal force to draw in radiator fluid into the engine bay. It is fitted with a tube in the center portion of the pump, which leads directly to the pump vanes and ensures that the radiator fluid goes straight to the network of radiator tubes in order that the cycle goes on without any letup. The radiator water that goes into the engine is usually mixed with a coolant to ensure a more cooling effect. The process of getting the Saab engine replenished efficiently is especially useful during those hard driving conditions when heat builds up considerably.

When the green-colored coolant gets out of the radiator, the block may have incurred a “weep hole” on the Saab water pump. Weep holes can be dangerous and are often occur without any immediate sign as far as the engine's performance is concerned. Weep holes drain the water of the Saab cooling system, putting your car in danger of getting over-heated real quick and without warning.
