Combining style and function

Ever since it was conceptualized, the Jeep was designed for all kinds of terrain. Back then, the military needed a universal vehicle that would serve a general purpose. The military then submitted the standards to different American auto makers. The standards that needs to be incorporated in the new vehicles were: load capacity of 600 pounds, wheelbase of under 75 inches, height under 36 inches, an engine that run smoothly from 3 to 50 miles per hour, a rectangular shaped body, two speed transfer case with four wheel drive, windshield that folds down, three bucket seats, blackout and driving lights and a gross vehicle weight of under 1200 pounds.

But only three car companies were up for it, one of them was the original Jeep maker, Willys-Overland Company. After the war, the company saw a civilian market for the Jeep.
