Guy's Guide to Being a Good Birth Partner
1) First and foremost, it’s the ultimate show of support to attend childbirth classes prior to the delivery. This can give you a much better idea of how you can help your partner with the various stages of labor. During these classes, you will probably be given a tour of the birthing room and hospital so you can familiarize yourself with the surroundings.
2) Reading as many books (especially those she is reading) is a good starting point. Explore the process of giving birth further by finding a video and watching it and talking with others about their experiences in the delivery room.
3) Work on a Birth Plan with your partner - this will help you find out what your partner’s expectations are of your role in the delivery room. Discuss your feelings and apprehensions with your partner, but be particularly sensitive to the way you do this. Instead of being sympathetic, your partner may interpret your apprehensions as a sign that you do not want to be in the delivery room.
4) Work out a checklist of everything you will need and pack it ready to go.
5) Read about Maternity Acupressure at http://Baby-HQ.com and see if it might be right for you and your partner. It is a seriously helpful tool in dealing with the pain.
6) Have the car gassed up at all times and mechanically ready for the ride to the hospital.
7) When labor begins, Mum may not be concentrating on much of anything other than the impending birth. Keep track of her suitcase and make sure it gets in the car with you.
8) Be sure to call the doctor and then call relatives to let them know the baby is on its way.
9) Prepare yourself to be screamed at, possibly hit, and being called names you might not have ever heard of! Key here is to stay CALM.
10) Happily accept your punishment and don’t take it personally. She’s just trying to displace her pain. Remember, too, that there will be highs, lows, mood swings, and changes in behavior that can occur at lightning fast speed. Try to keep up.
