Home Break Invasion - A true Story
While I was on vacation for three weeks in Quebec in 2003 my home was not only broken into but "lived in!" I came home drove up the drive way and entered my little house to find all the windows covered in blankets and sheets. It was very dark and smelled of cigarettes. My computer (which was only 9 months old) was boxed up to be taken to be pawned and there was a young man (about 25 I would guess) and his girl sleeping in my bed!
So what happened? I went to the kitchen to call the police and my two guest fled my house. I chased them and yelled I knew the girl (I had seen her around town before and she has unmistakable red hair) and the young man told me to "f--- ---" you get the message.
So I called the police and they sent a rookie (he could not have been more then 21) who took photos and made a report. To this day I do not know if the two have been caught. But I have not seen the young woman (or man) about town and I would remember both!
My little home (it was a mobile home) was completely trashed and many things were stolen.
It took me days to restore order. I did have home insurance for break ins so recieved about half of the value of all that was stolen and damaged from the insurance company because I did have the doors locked and windows secured. Be sure to do this if you go on vacation so your insurance is viable (READ the FINE PRINT!)
Still my break-in was traumatic and I decided to move the next year when better circumstances arose namely I sold my house and lived a more nomadic life (rent is high where I live - TOO HIGH!)
So, could I afford expensive alarm systems or guard dogs (I like calm Golden Retriever type dogs) -NO! For Gods sake I lived in a mobile home! But I did have good locks and secure windows but it is quite easy to jimmy a mobile home door (though I think they first entered through a window as on was broken in the kitchen). So my suggestion is to first have good locks and watchful neighbors. I had neighbors but they either new the two theives or ignored them. A good reason in itself to leave my neighborhood!
All in all I was lucky the creeps did not have a gun and shoot me as they fled many people in these crazed days end up this way.
