The Rocky mountain west consists of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although all of these states are known for for their natural beauty there are many aspects of this area that most people do not often travel to but are definitely worthy of attention. If you have the desire and ability then add some of these to your list of activities when you next visit this region.
1. Visit the Mineral Pools- This geographic area has a large amount of thermal activity which has resulted in a a lot of bathing hot pools in these states. From primitive to exorbitant there is a pool for every taste. For those that are more outdoorsy then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the best place for you. Those that like more of a resort feel, check out some of the places that Colorado has to offer.
2. Search for Petraglyphs- The archaic Indians of the Intermountain west were extremely artistic, and a a lot of there 4000 year old art can persists to this day, painted on rock surfaces across the region. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a interesting trail and interpretive center, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to stop for a visit.
3. Visit the Less Famous National Parks- If you have not been to Yellowstone, then certainly you should visit there first, but for those who have experienced the main circuit of parks in the west you could think about stopping by the less famous ones. Cumulatively, this region has over 53 National sites, and many of the state have exemplarystate park systems as well.
4. Drop by the Regional Museums (as well as the more famous ones)- A lot of the best museums are those that are off the beaten track, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local citizenry gathered memorabilia from their town spanning a 100 years. Of course, some of the more famous museums are worth visiting as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum delves into western history for example Old Guns of the West or Natural History.
5. Enjoy Heavenly Snow- Western summers are famous, but we also have some of the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying downhill skiing, you should consider x-country skiing. Sun Valley, Idaho has wonderful trails an addiotion top pick is the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF in Montana.
6. Explore a Mountain Lake during the beautiful summer weather– The mountains of the intermountain west are full of beautiful alpine lakes. A lot of these are well known but a few of the most exquiste are off the beaten track and sometimes require a difficult journey to arrive at. One of our favorite picks is Seneca Lake in the Wind Rivers. This alpine lake is enclosed by tall cliffs and picturesque mountains that were created by glaciers. The Wind River mountains are known for fishing and hiking opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the Wind River Mountains is Lonsome Lake in the Cirque of the Towers area in the southern section of the Wind Rivers.
As you can see, there are a many great things that you could do in the mountain west, instead of the tiredgroup tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only be a great change of pace but provide you with many great pictures for a long time to come.
