Capitalize on the nursing shortage crisis

Most country has a nursing shortage, one that is predicted to grow to alarming proportions. Many nurses are retiring, and too few are entering the profession. Compounding the problem is that within the next 5 to 10 years, over 76 million baby boomers are scheduled to retire from the workforce, with only about 44 million nurses available to pick up the slack. This will soon place unprecedented demands for services on a health system that is already stretched thin.

The shortage of allied health care professionals, especially nurses, have created a new boom to the nursing agency, nurse registry business, supplemental staffing agency for medical professionals, permanent placement medical recruiter, or starting a business in home care and staffing pool. The medical staffing industry will continue to grow because of the upcoming baby boomers, and the current supply of nurses is dwindling. The average age for nurses is in the forties, and they are not being replaced by the new generations. Entrepreneurs have made lucrative business in nursing agency, nursing registry, home care business, medical recruiter recruiting, or as independent nurse contractor in their own field.

Now is the time for entrepreneurs to start a nursing agency, nursing registry business, operate a home care business, or as a medical recruiter or just become an independent health care contractor. By being an independent healthcare contractor, you are bypassing the agency and are self employed. Health care facilities are the clients. Homecare is regulated by all levels of government from local to federal level. Homecare levels of regulations depend on the category of service provided to clients. Homecare services ranges from providing just companions or the more medically needed clients such as terminally ill clients. Home care services can be in the form of social service, non-medical, and medical services.

An independent nurse contractor deals with a healthcare facility to provide nursing services. On the other hand, a nursing agency is an agency that provides nursing services to private individuals and healthcare facilities on a contractual basis. An independent contractor can contract his or her nursing services directly with a healthcare facility or with a patient and continue bedside practice. The contract is similar to those used by nursing agencies and travel companies outlining the services to be provided, the responsibilities of both the healthcare facility and the nurse, and the length of time the services are to be provided.

Nurse contractors practice in all aspects of the healthcare industry; home health, nursing homes, nursing agencies, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and doctors’ offices, all aspects of nurse consulting, just to name a few. No advance degrees are necessary unless your business includes diagnosing and treating medical problems. State nurse practice acts do no prohibit a nurse from starting up their own business as an independent nurse contractor. Independent nurse contractor is one who deals with a healthcare facility for nursing services. A contractual agreement is drawn up between you and the institution. You will be able to negotiate your compensation, hours worked and length of time your services will be needed.
