One of the most celebrated dance companies in Great Britain is the Rambert Dance Company. Its founder was a lady called Marie Rambert, who was a Polish dance teacher. The Rambert Dance Company 's roots stem from 1919 in London where Marie RAmbert started teaching dance under the name of the Rambert School. The Rambert Dance Company evolved from the Rambert School, being formally established in 1926. Consequently, this makes the Rambert Dance Company the UK's oldest dance organisation of its kind.

Marie Rambert was a fierce advocate of the creative input of dancer's themselves, believing that an individual's emotions, integrity and creativity were extremely important. These ideas were important to Rambert as she believed that dance could easily become homogenous without them... and she was determined not to create a "sausage factory" of dancers.
