Dance: The Rambert Dance Company
The Rambert Dance Company 's roots stem from 1919 in London where Marie RAmbert started teaching dance under the name of the Rambert School. The Rambert Dance Company evolved from the Rambert School, being formally established in 1926. Consequently, this makes the Rambert Dance Company the UK's oldest dance organisation of its kind.
Marie Rambert was a fierce advocate of the creative input of dancer's themselves, believing that an individual's emotions, integrity and creativity were extremely important. These ideas were important to Rambert as she believed that dance could easily become homogenous without them... and she was determined not to create a "sausage factory" of dancers.
It is likely that Rambert's passionate beliefs have resulted in the Rambert's famous relationships with musicians, composers, designers and visual artisans, many of whom have been seen as extremely daring and progressive.
Collaberation
It is clear when experiencing any Rambert production that the live music backdrop heightens the sentiments experienced by all involved, dancers and audience alike. The Rambert Company is associated with the London Musici, which is able to contribute a multitude of musical styles. Presently, the relationship between the Rambert Dance Company and the London Musici stretches back over a decade, which is half of the orchestra's life. In global terms and in this area of the arts, the relationship between the Rambert Company and the London Musici is something of a rarity.
Earning Your Place
Of course as with any prestigious organisation, the competition for positions in the Rambert is extremely fiercely fought; as a result the dancers of the Rambert are perceived as being supremely gifted individuals who are able to perform myriad dance styles with equal technical ability. Such are their talents that dancers of the Rambert Company are considered theatre "athletes" who posess the ability to astound audiences with their technical skill and at the same time move them emotionally. Rambert dancers are no doubt proud to belong to one of Britain’s most important contemporary dance companies; a dance company that performs a variety of dance styles choreographed by exceptional and exciting individuals.
One of the most important goals of the company is to “create dance for future generations”; an objective that is met as a consequence of Rambert's philosophy of helping young and exciting choreographers to develop their skills. This is borne out by Rambert performances themselves.
If you attend a Rambert event you will have a stimulating and inspiring experience; an experience you will share with others in the audience no matter how old you are or where you are from. The combination of the skill of the Rambert dancers, the abilities of the musicians as well as the dramatic ambience created through the set design and costumes provides superior entertainment year round to thousands.
The Rambert and Community Involvement
Another unique facet of the Rambert is its participation and interaction with people through community classes and courses, which provide opportunities for people to enhance their dance skills. There is a workshop program taken to schools and colleges, residency courses for groups and many other teaching programs and projects offered throughout the year. Of course, such community work is expensive in terms of time and money. Consequently, the Rambert Dance Company requires significant support through private and public sponsorship. Anyone can contribute to help sustain these practices, and in the process help to expose people to the delights of contemporary dance.
