Life without reading glasses - Posted by Jerome.

Life without reading glasses
Tired of squinting to read? Dread the thought of adjusting to multi-focal lenses? Presbyopia happens to everyone. Aging results in a gradual loss of flexibility, leaving the natural lens inside the eye harder and less elastic. But, fret not. Help is available. No one needs to know you suffer from old-age long-sight.

As you age (somewhere between the ages of 40-50 changes occur in the natural lens inside your eye. results in difficulty in focusing and seeing up close. This condition is called Presbyopia ("old eyes" or "old-age long-sight") also known as “lao hua yan” in Chinese.
When you develop presbyopia, you find that you need to the books, magazines, newspapers, menus and other reading materials at arm's length in order to focus properly. When you perform near work, such as embroidery or do writing, you may have headaches eyestrain, or feel fatigued.
Everyone gets presbyopia as we age, regardless of whether not you have worn spectacles. Just as we are not able to reverse the aging process, there is no way to prevent presbyopia. No medication vitamins or exercises can stop or reverse it.
Previously, only reading glasses could help a person with presbyopia. Now, however, there are several treatment options f presbyopia that can reduce your need for reading glasses or even he you to do without them!

1. Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)
The first non-laser, minimally invasive procedure to correct long-sightedness and presbyopia. CK uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to steepen the cornea. This re-shaped cornea allows light to properly focus on the retina, restoring your near vision.
The procedure is conveniently and safely performed in the doctor's office, taking about 3-5 minutes and with no cutting or laser involved.

2. Presbyopia LASIK
This latest laser vision correction procedure safely and effectively restores your reading vision. The laser creates a multifocal shape on your cornea which enables both distance and reading vision. It is most effective for patients who are both hyperopic (long-sighted) as well as presbyopic.
Both eyes are treated on the same day; laser treatment is painless and takes about 3-5 minutes per eye.

3. Monovision LASIK
This is an effective treatment option for those who are myopic (short-sighted) and presbyopic.
Monovision is an option for people with presbyopia where vision is adjusted so that one eye is slightly better for reading vision and the other eye slightly better for distance vision. This technique is generally employed for people who desire not to use reading glasses. With monovision, you do not need to make any conscious adjustments in how to see, the brain automatically adjusts so that distance and reading vision become effortless. Monovision LASIK is not a cure for presbyopia. It simply "re-sets" the clock for near vision, giving you an additional 5 to 10 years without the need for reading glasses for most tasks.
4. Multifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implants (after cataract surgery)
When you have a cataract (cloudy natural lens due to age) the only effective treatment is surge to remove the cataract, and replace it with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). These IOLs can either be Multifocal or Monofocal. As its name suggests, Multifocal IOI allow for both distance as well near vision and they are a good option for certain people who want to be free of glasses.
Presently, the majority patients who undergo cataract surgery receive monofocal IOL these lenses successfully correct distance vision but you will need reading glasses for close work.
If a Multifocal lens implant is not suitable for you, using monofocal lenses to give you Monovision (one eye better for distance are the other better for near) may be a viable alternative that also allow you to be free of reading glasses.

The treatment option most suitable for you is dependent on your eye condition and spectacle lens power and also on your age, profession, hobbies, and person preferences. A thorough eye examination and discussion with your eye doctor needed in order to determine which option is best for you.
