RADIO NOSTALGIA NETWORK LAUNCHES FLAGSHIP RADIO STATION
WRJ Radio offers “Most Authentic” Old-Time Radio
(Dallas, TX)-The Radio Nostalgia Network, an conglomeration of nostalgia-related podcasts, and Humphrey/Camardella Productions announce the launch of WRJ Radio, a 24-hour Internet radio station streaming old time radio. The station's producers say that unlike other OTR stations, WRJ offers a complete, comprehensive programming lineup. Programming director John Grimmett says it will be the “most authentic and historic station on the Internet, with a comprehensive collection of shows broadcast in their original chronological order.”
Grimmett provides the programming from his personal collection, while Dennis Humphrey of the Radio Nostalgia Network provides the broadcast facilities, with support from Bob Camardella, producer of the popular “Boxcars711 Old Time Radio” podcast. "Our emphasis is to provide the best family programing as close to the original broadcast day as possible", says Dennis Humphrey. We are developing a comprehensive distribution network that will maximize all media channels. Also, WRJ will provide linking widgets for any Old Time Radio site that wants to provide their listeners with our commercial free content.
The station's slogan describes its goal: “Authentic Vintage Radio - Radio, as it sounded and felt.”
Grimmett, producer of the “Radio Journeys” podcast, is a long-time collector of old radio shows, but unlike many collectors, who often select shows from a particular genre or decade, he has painstakingly and systematically sought every available show since the late 1920s, when the earliest surviving shows are available. His focus has been historical, with a desire to piece together what little survives from vintage radio in chronological order. The result is a nearly complete catalog of shows from the 1930s, but now with a growing collection of shows from the 1940s and '50s. All of it is being streamed daily on WRJ.
“Our goal is to present old radio shows the way they were originally broadcast,” Grimmett said. “We want to be the first 'full-service' OTR station. If a show survives, we'll broadcast it.”
To attain that authenticity, Grimmett has created station IDs and time signals that sound exactly like those of the 1930s and '40s. Original commercials of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s run between programs, along with WRJ's retro-sounding promotional announcements. Programs are played in the order they were originally scheduled.
WRJ's formula is noticeably different from other Internet OTR stations, Grimmett said. “The focus of most OTR stations is on shows only from the late 1940s and '50s,” he explained. “And they tend to focus overwhelmingly on the mystery, crime and horror genres, with a little comedy every now and then. But on WRJ, you'll hear all of those shows, plus everything else. We have Lux Radio Theater daily, plus original big-band remotes. We have 1930s radio serials and original daytime soap operas. You'll hear all surviving episodes in their original order, too. That's how we recreate radio as it actually sounded and felt.”
Dennis Humphrey said, " We are offering WRJ Radio Steam free to radio stations to use as programming content and will seek syndication." Listen to WRJ Radio Now!
