Brace Yourself For A Bronx Tale Broadway

A Bronx Tale Broadway is a show that brings the hard life of the Bronx to the bright lights of Broadway. The show was such a hit off-Broadway that none other than Robert DeNiro himself chose it to be the story for his big screen directorial debut.

From Hollywood to Broadway

Most plays make it to Broadway before they hit the silver screen, but A Bronx Tale Broadway seems to have worked the other way around. The play is written by Chazz Palminteri and is a one man show, chronicling the life of a boy who grows up in the Bronx in the 1960s. After witnessing a murder and deciding to keep quiet about it, the local mafia boss befriends him, showing him the door to a possible way of life that glitters but is defiantly not all gold.

As the story has it, DeNiro first saw the play, when it was running off-Broadway. The play was already such a success that Palminteri had been made a number of offers. He had even turned down the offer of a cool million when his conditions were not met- they were that he be able to write the screenplay and play the role of Sonny, the mafia boss. DeNiro agreed and the two sealed their deal with a simple handshake. Today, the movie is one of the few stellar films that deal with the mafia in a realistic manner.

Of Mice and Men

One of the reasons why A Bronx Tale Broadway is such a success, both on the screen and off is because; it deals with some real issues regarding the way we see the mob and gangster lives. This is something that has prevailed even today- there is a glamour associated with that kind of lifestyle and when one grows up in a tough neighborhood, it's easy to see that as a quick shortcut to the good life.

A Bronx Tale Broadway holds a special place in Palminteri’s life, because it was drawn on a number of autobiographical incidents. Today, the play holds special significance with relation to Palminteri's father. In a special note about the play, he states that he wanted to write about the working man, a person who took pains to give a better life for his kids. These were people who went to jobs everyday, jobs which weren't glamorous or even well paying, like a sanitation worker or bus driver. And yet, they kept at their jobs, trying their best to make an honest living and imbibe their children with a sense of values.

A Bronx Tale Broadway shows how easy it is to become mesmerized by the bright lights of a mafia life. In the play, as Palminteri's character grows older, it becomes harder and harder to live up to his father's expectations, as the world of the gangster Sonny becomes more attractive. In the end, Palminteri must make the choice about what he wants to do with his life. This hard-hitting plays has already run to critical and commercial success off-Broadway.
