‘Smallville’ Creators Use Lex Luthor as Bait for Fans in WGA Strike

With the fate of so many television shows hanging in the balance, depending on the duration and outcome of the now-four-week-old writers’ strike, it’s not surprising for various industry sectors to show support behind the picketing authors.  Stars of various small screen programs have joined their disgruntled writers at the picket line or have sent food and care packages to the writers on walkout.

Of late, a formal campaign called Pencils2MediaMoguls has kicked into gear courtesy of United Hollywood.  The basic premise is similar to the nuts show of support by avid fans who rallied to keep the show, Jericho , on the air.

In the case of Pencils2MediaMoguls, the movement is campaigning for people to show their support for the striking writers by donating as many pencils to the six heads of the major studios or conglomerates.

For Miles Millar and Al Gough, the brains behind The CW’s Smallville, there’s no harm in offering additional incentive for more fans to get on the Pencils2MediaMoguls bandwagon.  Their lure – none other than their own evil Lex Luthor.  Granted that perhaps, Smallville’s resident hero, Tom Welling, might have been a more attractive bait, still, Michael Rosenbaum also has a considerable pull among fans of the DC comics-inspired series.

Gough released an e-mail to Smallville fans last week, thanking everyone for all that they’ve done so far.  Then he pitched an idea as to how they could take their support to the next level.  In his e-mail, Gough announced that for every box of environmentally-friendly pencils fans buy in support of the writers at United Hollywood, they (the fans) would be included in an online lottery.  The prize for the winner who will be chosen at random – a congratulatory phone call from the man who gives life to Smallville’s chief villain, Michael Rosenbaum.
