Some people might ask the question, “Why use wood furniture outdoors?” While to some the question might be the opposite. As in, “Why shouldn’t you use wood furniture outdoors?” Anyway, there are many furniture pieces that are made out of a wide variety of materials such as plastic, metal, wicker and other synthetic materials. And with the other options available, one should really examine why he or she should use wood furniture outdoors.

Actually, when you think of it, wood is really meant to be used outdoors. In fact, it makes sense if you use wood furniture outdoors since they are made from trees and trees grow outside the house. And people don’t really have to wonder why wood furniture lasts for a long time, outside our houses, when given the right treatment and when cared for properly. It also depends on the type of wood you pick if you want the furniture to endure for a long time.

Though wood really does wither over time, you can actually protect the furniture you use outdoor if you take care of it properly. Some of the effective ways to protect it from the sun is to stain and paint it since it adds additional protective layer to the wood furniture. Water repellant stains are also helpful to your outdoor wood furniture. As the name implies, it protects the wood from damages that can be brought by water. As we all know, water causes the wood to rot and crack. However, keep in mind that when applying or using paint or stain, be sure to use a durable blend so that it will dry fast and completely. Also, this will prevent the paint or stain from rubbing off as people sit on the furniture.

You can also buy special kinds of wood furniture that will last for years. One option is to avail of treated wood since it is defiant to rotting due to some chemical elements. However, one issue with treated wood is that it often comes in green and easily warps than regular wood.

One popular choice for outdoor wood furniture is Teak wood since it is highly dense and durable. It can also protect itself from certain damages even when left untreated since it contains natural oils. Teak wood can be mostly found in Indonesia and is very resistant to termite and other insect attacks due to its high oil content that makes it also water repellant.

Chinese Oak, on the other hand, is a dense kind of hardwood that has a very fine grain. It is a kind of wood that is naturally light and has a pinkish tint sometimes. Its tannic acid content makes it an ideal material for outdoor furniture since it resists fungi and insect attacks.

Also, a very popular choice for outdoor furniture is Cedar or Western Cedar. It is often found in Canada and has a beautiful color and finish. It is also naturally resistant to insect damage and decay even when exposed to sun, heat, rain or cold all year. It can also last for decades, even in the harshest environment, when treated properly. Lastly, an effective way to protect your outdoor wood furniture is to just put a roof over it. Through this, your furniture will be protected from rain, sun and wind.
