Search Engine Optimisation for a Dynamic Website

You have a big dynamic website and you are finding it difficult to get your dynamic pages indexed in the search engines.

Before actually getting to know how dynamic websites can be optimized, it would be right to first understand what we actually mean by a dynamic website. Dynamic websites are the websites whose pages are generated on the fly. Unlike static pages (primarily .htm/.html pages), dynamic pages are generated when a user triggers an action or makes a search by selecting some options.

A sample dynamic URL looks like http://www.abc.com/product/catalogue.jsp?catalogueID=2

Dynamic URLs generally contain query strings and special symbols like ‘?’.

The successful search engine optimization (SEO) of a dynamic web site requires complex search engine technology and methods that are substantially different and much more sophisticated than the SEO techniques used for ordinary static web sites.

Why does dynamic pages face problem in getting indexed in the search engines?

Most of the dynamic web pages are created "on the fly” and though these pages work absolutely well for real users, but they present a lot of problems in front of the search engine’s crawlers or spiders, like GoogleBot and Yahoo Slurp etc.

This is because of the simple fact that all dynamically generated pages don't exist until a user actually selects or chooses the given variable(s) that generates the pages. Most search engine spiders or crawlers do not have any capability to select or choose any of those options or variables.

What are the options to make a search engine index your dynamic URLs?

1. Search engine-friendly URLs

The first thing from SEO point of view is to convert dynamic URLs into search-engine friendly static looking URLs. This is done through a technique called URL rewriting. The type of URL rewrite you use depends on the type of server your site is hosted on.

For example, the dynamic URL in our example can be rewritten as

http://www.abc.com/product/catalogue/2

2. Include Direct Text Links to Dynamic Pages

After you have rewritten the dynamic URLs as static ones, you then need to include direct text links to these dynamic pages in your site or from other external websites. Search engines can then easily crawl these pages by following the text links.
