Usual Treatment for TMJ Sydrome

People go through life suffering from bodily twinges and aches while dismissing these as ordinary illnesses. A persistent headache or earache is one of these disturbances. But do not simply take that earache for granted. As it could be a manifestation of a more serious disease. In a worst case scenario, it might be TMJ (Temporemandibular joint) syndrome, or the swelling of the joint that attaches the jaw to the skull. Rather than searching for relief for earaches or neck pains, look for TMJ treatment, or the appropriate medical intervention to heal the condition.

The TMJ has two major problems. One is myogenous or muscle-related, while the other is arthrogenous, which is joint-related.Tension and fatigue of the jaw and its surrounding muscles cause muscle-related problems while the wearing out of the tissues in the TMJ area causes joint-related problems.

Pain along the facial muscles, the ear and below the ear, difficulty chewing, opening and closing your mouth and inflammation of the affected area are some the most common symptoms of TMJ syndrome. Depression, chronic headaches, and ringing in the ears are other symptoms to check for TMJ syndrome. Finally, a problematic bite should prompt you to be evaluated for TMJ.

TMJ Syndrome Treatment Procedures

Several simple treatment for TMJ syndrome are available and these include correcting posture, eating soft food, cutting food to bite sizes and applying hot/cold compress to the inflamed region. Oral splints that are necessary to prevent clenching and grinding of the teeth as well as anti-inflammatory medicines may be prescribed by doctors. In rare occasions, patients will be advised to consult a psychotherapist to help correct habits that make TMJ syndrome worse.

Minimal invasive procedures can also be administered:

* Injection into the joints;
* Arthroscopy (the insertion of a 2.8 mm endoscope into the space on the upper joint;
* Irrigation of the swollen area using saline, or closed manipulation;
* Closed manipulation (with the use of anaesthetics) by placing the thumb on the back teeth and fingers under the jaw to distract the joint downwards and pull the jaw forward and prevent adhesions.

There are different TMJ treatments, because there are different levels of the TMJ symptoms. Relieving the pain and removing the swelling are the main aims of initial treatment methods. Usually, this is done by letting you take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines.

Persistent TMJ signs will require a hot or cold pack applied to the affected area and this will be done 3-5 times daily for two weeks to a month.  Soft diet to ease the pain along the joint resulting from too much chewing and relaxing the jaw are alternative treatments recommended by doctors.

If the condition persists in spite of continuous medication and other treatment methods, it will be best to undergo to surgery.

When Surgery is Necessary

Usually, people will try out other methods of treatment first before deciding to have a surgery. Most importantly, they need to select the safest treatment that best fits their symptoms. Herbal medicines and exercises for the head-neck are useful, yet rarely explored, treatment methods. To know more about the nature of TMJ syndrome, specific details can be read online.
