The benefits of hotel loyalty schemes for business travellers

The idea of hotel loyalty schemes goes back to the early 1980s when major US airlines launched frequent flyer programmes, with hotels soon following suit. This resulted in the present scenario where virtually every major hotel group has some sort of loyalty scheme for frequent business travellers. The cost of accommodation and food can eat up a large proportion of the business travellers’ budget and therefore it is in most hotels’ best interests to offer the most competitive rates and benefit schemes they can.

All loyalty programmes offer exclusive privileges and benefits, joining is usually free, while there are no membership fees to be paid at later dates. However, your facilities and rewards vary depending on how loyal you are. In general, room rates are not normally affected by hotel loyalty cards although members of such schemes can receive priority booking, free upgrades and late check outs, all of which enhance the business traveller's stay and helps to save money. Additionally, loyalty points can collected and redeemed for other rewards including free flights, fine dining, room upgrades and free weekend stays.

Many hotels have also partnered with other industries to add value to their loyalty programs. These partners can include car hire firms, airlines and banks, with business travellers receiving additional privileges from these partners, as well as the opportunity to collect and redeem points across a network of affiliated businesses.

Many business hotels offering loyalty schemes also provide an executive or club floor for their corporate guests - usually on the top floor of the hotel - designed to offer business guests the very best in comfort and privacy. Unlike other benefits that can be gained from loyalty schemes, an annual membership fee is required should you wish to enjoy such executive privileges as superior accommodation and additional perks such as express check in and use of the executive club or lounge, many of which offer complimentary breakfasts and evening cocktails.

When considering a paid loyalty programme, it’s important to research the destinations where your chosen hotel chain has properties. After all, if your chosen hotel chain has very few hotels close to the destinations you regularly travel to, then it will take you quite some time to be able to sit back and reap the rewards of your loyalty and may not be worth joining in the long run.

When deciding on your choice of hotel it is important to consider the value found in the particular hotel honors scheme instead of simply going for the hotel with the lowest rates. While it might end up costing a little extra to begin with, the value and benefits accrued through the preferred loyalty scheme may in turn offset the higher cost. That way your business trip will not only be profitable to your company, but also beneficial to you.
